Goal number two is zero hunger. It is estimated that about 690 million people suffers from hunger. That is 8.9 percent of the world population. During the COVID-19 pandemic there could be 130 million more people suffering from hunger.
This year’s Nobel Peace Prize has been given to the organization WFP. They were given this year’s prize because of how their organization had the effect of assisting 97 million people. The organization helps areas that need assistance when it comes to essential supplies like food.
The Nobel Committee said that they gave the organization the Nobel prize because of its effort to end hunger and bettering the living conditions in conflict-affected areas and preventing hunger to be used as a weapon in war and conflict. Chairwoman Berit Reiss-Anderson said that “The World Food Programme plays a key role in multilateral co-operation in making food security an instrument of peace” .
